Chroma key compositing, or Chroma keying, is a visual effects/post-production technique for compositing (layering) two images or video streams together based on color hues (Chroma range). The technique has been used heavily in many fields to remove a background from the subject of a photo or video – particularly the news casting, motion picture and videogame industries. A color range in the foreground footage is made transparent, allowing separately filmed background footage or a static image to be inserted into the scene.
The best practice when doing Chroma Key photography and/or video is to use a solid color background such as a green screen or a blue screen when shooting your subject. After the image has been captured, the solid colored background is removed and made transparent, and a replacement background is then added giving the impression that the subject was at a different location, or a much preferred background is then added.
Because separating a background from a human subject in a photo or video is much easier if the background is made of a solid color which is not found in human skin tones, like the colors green and blue. There are other precautions that need to be taken when shooting Chroma Key. The subject that is being photographed or video recorded must have contrasting colors compared to the background. If you are using a green screen, you do not want your subject be wearing anything that has any shade of green. If the subject is wearing a green T-shirt and you are using a green background, the only thing that will show up is the subject’s arms in their head.
The use of digital cameras. When using a digital camera instead of film, you obtain better results from a green screen shoot because of the cleanness and luminescence of green over blue. Color spill. ... Depending on your shoot, color spill can be better or worse depending on the color of your screen.
Chroma Key is an amazing process which allows an individual or group of individuals can be at any place, at any time in the world, or out of this world. It is only limited to the imagination, and used worldwide in movies, commercials, whether it is in video or photography.
We offer Chroma Key Videography and Chroma Key Photography to our clients and the general public. Although, we are limited in our travel distance; we will come to your location as long as is within 100 miles from our location although we prefer you coming to our office due to the amount of space required in order to perform an accurate keying.
In most cases, we require a space 15 feet wide at the minimum and at least 20 feet in depth with a 7 to 10 foot ceiling height, with the limited external lighting.
